The truth is not debatable

The truth is not what you believe, the Truth is the Truth. By definition. Good science that follows a rigid methodology and avoids making guesses at conclusions that are unknown is the most significant search for truth that is going on today. Firmly held beliefs– even, or especially even, religious ones– do not constitute truth.

I’d like to line all the politicians and bureaucrats up in a long line and bitch slap each one till he or she told the truth about something. “Uh, Mrs Clinton? Hillary Clinton? You’re up next. Could you stand right here please.”

I figure most of them would want to say something true after the very first slap but would be unable. Most of these types of money-grubbing backstabbers will lie when the truth would serve them better. Many I’m afraid would go to their grave with giant, hand-shaped, red welts on both sides of their face, not even understanding what is happening to them.

Sadly, the vast majority of politicians and bureaucrats probably don’t even know what the truth is, regardless of what the meaning of the word is is–all they know is what will benefit them the most directly or indirectly. I don’t think we are sending our best and brightest to operate the government and I don’t think the population at large is smart enough to discern this.

UPDATE: Peggy Noonan along the same lines, discussing the politically anointed:

Is this good for our democracy, this air of inevitability? Is it good in terms of how the world sees us, and how we see ourselves? Or is it something we want to break out of, like a trance?

It would be understandable if they were families of a most extraordinary natural distinction and self-sacrifice. But these are not the Adamses of Massachusetts we’re talking about. You’ve noticed, right?
